When National Geographic filmmakers climb a tree, they don't bother with the backyard variety. After all, what's a treetop expedition without flying snakes and orangutans? Rain Forest: Heroes of the High Frontier follows several nimble explorers into the upper reaches of the rain-forest canopy, where more than half of the Earth's species sprout, hatch, or wriggle their way into the world. Creative camerawork, clever editing, and a playful musical score lend a distinctive personality to the film and make it one of National Geographic's most enjoyable. Even plants come alive with character: In one scene, time-lapse cameras capture seedlings shooting up through the trees like belligerent siblings, shoving each other aside in competition for sunlight. The film also chronicles the history of canopy research, from fumigation to today's minimum-impact techniques. While the field is gaining popularity, contemporary rain-forest scientists are still considered pioneers. Rampant clear-cutting adds an air of urgency to their work, as they struggle to ensure that the region survives in three dimensions as well as two. --Claire Campbell

Customer Rating: Summary: quick delivery, fine condition Comment: Item was exactly as expected and came quickly; I would use this vendor again. I work in canopy research, so of course I think the film is good. Just wish it was available on Netflix!
Customer Rating: Summary: Rain Forest: Heroes of the High Frontier Comment: The visuals are stunning. The text is interesting and accurate. It is also well paced and will keep your interest. The class of 24 high school students that watched this video enjoyed it and rated it a A+. They learned enough to ask questions about some of the implications. It contains plenty of current research that has not been put on any other videos. As a science teacher I also found it fascinating. One of the best things was the researchers it showed were young people doing real science.
