Basic Yoga Workout for Dummies A workout that balances both the body and the mind can be found in Basic Yoga Workout for Dummies. Fundamental postures are explained and demonstrated slowly with an emphasis on breathing and motion. Sara Ivanhoe teaches 12 basic poses that are termed the "daily dozen" and offers challenges and modifications to each of these moves. Ivanhoe presents these concepts in an approachable and calming manner that adds to the overall relaxed feeling that this session exudes. Newcomers to the practice of yoga will learn jargon, essential postures, and focusing techniques. Experienced participants may find some information redundant, but Ivanhoe offers such thorough explanations about each posture that you can't help but expand your existing knowledge of yoga. As the mountain pose, standing forward bend, and downward facing dog are explained (not to mention the nine other poses within the "daily dozen"), proper body alignment becomes the focus. Meticulous attention is given to the connection between breathing and body movement with several reminders to keep the spine in "neutral alignment." This session ranks great for safety and content and makes yoga accessible to anyone who "always wanted to, but never did." This is a substantial program that can introduce the basics and build your understanding of yoga. --Olivia Voigts Beyond Basic Yoga for Dummies Beyond Basic Yoga for Dummies presents 12 yoga poses that skilled instructor Sara Ivanhoe calls the "daily dozen." Ivanhoe is calm, clear, warm, and patient, demonstrating each pose as the screen flashes easier and more challenging modifications. The too-frequent voiceover "tips," "mythbusters," and "warnings"--announced by sound effects--are louder than Ivanhoe's voice and become disconcerting interruptions. Since they also appear in print on the screen, the jarring voice is unnecessary. Ivanhoe herself could give any tips needed for safety and effectiveness. Ivanhoe's careful, detailed instructions for each pose keep the progression slow, and an experienced yoga practitioner could get bored. However, a beginning exerciser who has mastered a basic workout will find this program a helpful next step before going to an intermediate level. The 70-minute DVD edition also includes a 15-minute guided meditation and the option to eliminate the music--you still hear instructor cueing and voiceover tips, but you can play your own music. --Joan Price

Customer Rating: Summary: like a one on one yoga class Comment: This is like your own private one-on-one yoga for beginners class. The instructor gives you indications on what the poses are, how to get into them, how to stay in them, how to get out of them. She also gives you options on how to make these poses easier or more challenging, depending on your skill level. Yoga is not a one size fits all discipline. There are no other people shown in this video doing difficult poses that a beginner cannot do (making you feel inadequate) - just the instructor. It's very comfortable. To enjoy yourself to the fullest, I do recommend that you have at the ready your: DVD remote control, yoga mat, pillow/towel, yoga strap, and a chair. This way you can go though the DVD without serious interruption and really get to take in what is happening. You'll enjoy it without having to run around the house looking for those things.
Customer Rating: Summary: START HERE!!!! Comment: If you are new to yoga then you need to start with this dvd. This is a good introduction for yoga. There is no vinyasa flow or anything like that, just a basic start of the poses. There are times when it might seem a little silly, but if you are somewhat inflexible (like I was) then you ought to start with this video. From here, I would advise going on to Seane Corn videos. Again, start here if you want to start doing yoga. Sara Ivanhoe offers plenty of variations if you are unable to do the poses as she demonstrates them. Enjoy!
Customer Rating: Summary: Very good set of DVDs Comment: I began using these DVDs as a novice to yoga. Deceptively simple at first. Despite my increased strength and flexibility, these DVDs are my favorites. My only objection is that I wish there was a way to turn off the cueing.
Customer Rating: Summary: A good introduction to yoga for beginners. Comment: These two DVDs comprise a good introduction to yoga for beginners. The instructor works slowly through the postures, explaining the techniques and benefits. Each DVD contains twelve postures. The first DVD includes basic postures, while the second DVD contains more advanced postures and also a 15-minute primer on meditation.
I found it quaint that the instructor finds the lunge position more challenging than the tree position (balancing on one foot with the other foot against your thigh). I am not sure if this stems from misunderstanding of the difficulty of the postures or it may be just a glitch in editing, but by and large, these DVDs are certainly worth their price. Recommended for beginners with no prior knowledge of yoga.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great! Comment: At this point I've done this yoga routine 3 times, and I can I already feel the physical and mental benefits of the practice. This is a very good DVD for someone like me who'd never done it before.
