Summary: Thin is good
Comment: I have recently purchased a set of towels that are exactly this size and appear very similar. However they were purchased from www.americantowelstore.com, which is one of the sponsoring links provided by Amazon. I just want to make certain that people do not get the wrong opinion about flour sack towels based on the other opinions posted here. If you do a lot of baking, you will like the size of this towel, because is is the best size to cover a sheet pan of rolls while they rise.

Both of the earlier reviewers commented on how thin these towels are. I personally think that this thinness is what makes the towels so terrific. They are so light that they allow dough to rise easily. More importantly the thinness of this towel makes it more effective when it comes to drying dishes. In order to shine a glass, you must have an absolutely dry section of towel to provide the final polish to the almost dry glass. While a thick towel will hold lots of water, it will not have as much dry surface available. This is where this larger flour sack towel out shines the competition. You need as much of the fibers in the towel to be on the surface so you have that dry face available to shine a damp glass.

In addition to the advantage of greater surface area, I think the following test will prove that a flour sack towel has much better absorbency characteristics than your normal modern towel.

First, I weighed one perfectly dry white flour sack towel and one similarly dry, yellow, modern waffle weave towel. Then I tossed each in the rinse and spin cycle of my wash machine and weighed them again. I figured this would give an indication of how much water each could lock up without dripping. Finally I draped each towel over its own kitchen chair and let them air dry for an hour. I then weighed each towel once more. Here (in grams) are the results:

Yellow towel: Dry Weight: 78g Wet Weight: 133g 1 hr. Weight: 113g

White Towel: Dry Weight: 61g Wet Weight: 120g 1 hr. Weight: 87g

The yellow towel absorbed 70.5% of its dry weight, while the flour sack rate was 96.7%. In an hour, the yellow towel gave up 20 grams of the 55 grams it had absorbed for an evaporation rate of 36.4%. The flour sack towel, gave up 33grams of the 59 grams it has locked up, for a rate of 56%.

The bottom line is that these towels lock up more water and then dry more quickly than their modern thicker replacements. You will love how they shine up a clean glass, they don't lint, and they make excellent covers for rising dough.

Summary: Real flour sack cloth has a higher thread count.
Comment: These 'flour sack' cloths are not flour sack cloth. They 2 steps above cheesecloth. They aren't as absorbant as real flour sack cloth towels. I don't reccomend them at the listed price. I feel kindd of ripped off.

Summary: more like cheese cloth than flour sack
Comment: i was very disappointed in the quality of this product...not the tight woven soft fabric that i expect from something labeled "flour sack"..i have bought many in the past...this is more like a tightly woven cheese cloth..i will use them as rags...not kitchen towels
