Customer Rating: Summary: Target Could Be Sued -- Lab Created, Not Natural Comment: The Federal Trade Commission requires the disclosure of simulated, treated and lab created gems. Misleading a customer about the origin of a gemstone, in this case a product attached to Target and shipped out of New York, is serious business.
These particular gems, like another reviewer points out on the seller's website (Target), are very obviously artificial. They are hardly a "hot buy" with "limited quantities" that the description here on Amazon and on Target would have customers believe, presumably to lead would-be buyers to believe they will receive an amazing deal on genuine gemstones, as opposed to an average price on manmade ones. True, the price and the setting type are consistent with manmade stones, but obvious tip-off or not, Target and Amazon are legally required to disclose their origin accurately.
The color of the rubies on the set I received after a week of waiting for parcel post delivery from Ambras FJC of NY, NY are essentially hot pink instead of red, and the sapphires are a deep royal blue, not the cornflower blue or even the blackish blue of a genuine sapphire. Under a 10x jeweler's loupe there are no internal inclusions, which are a dead giveaway to the fact that these are lab Corundum, not naturally occurring sapphire or ruby. Since both these gemstones occur naturally in the United States, however, stating simply that they originate in the USA does not meet the requirements of legal disclosure.
Looking up the name of the New York jewelry company that supplies these earrings, I found two consumer reports on the Internet to similarly alarming effect (products described as gold but allegedly plated, fake gemstones, etc.). Target will undoubtedly plead ignorance, but with information as to the supplier's business practices so easily available to anyone with an Internet connection, I hold Target Corp. fully and singularly responsible for failing to vet their wholesalers.
Assuming this were a fair price for a lab created product, there are nevertheless quality problems. To the naked eye it is apparent that the surface polish is poor and the tables -- the top center facet on a round brilliant cut stone -- are poorly proportioned and visibly scuffed (something that should be next to impossible on a genuine stone with their diamond-like durability). Because the crown is cut so poorly the refractive properties originate from the back of the stones without any light play on the front/top facets. As for the 10K gold setting, this is your basic type with the fold-over tabs that can bend and lose their grip easily, not the prong-set basket type you see on diamond earrings or even a decent pair of CZs studs. As a result, they do not hug the ear but protrude awkwardly so that the setting steals the show. And because these tabs don't grip the gemstones all that well either, they collect fuzz (pre-installed in this instance).
A prior reviewer over on Target's website claimed to have contacted Target Corporate out of concern that these were artificial gems only to be told that Target has no further information other than what is presented to the customer on their website. Based on the scant amount of information provided, they could not unequivocally state that the stones are natural in origin. If this product continues to sell without a correction to the description, it constitutes out and out fraud as we already have evidence in one review dating from Spring 2008 that Target has been put on notice and yet has failed to confirm the legitimacy of their own product/advertising. Target needs to be taken to task for this. I'm not the person to do it -- these will simply be returned to the store with a demand for a shipping refund to boot -- but I sincerely hope someone else does.
Bottom line? Even if it were plainly disclosed that these are manmade gemstones, this would not be a good value for the money because they are not quality settings, cuts or convincing colors. The only thing they have going for them are a lack of inclusions rendering better transparency overall.
Customer Rating: Summary: Really very beautiful Comment: I like them a lot. The color is very distinct and I would recommend them to anybody. The price is very reasonable too.
Customer Rating: Summary: Beautiful Comment: I really like the earrings very much and will get much use out of them.
Customer Rating: Summary: STUNNING! Comment: For the price, I was expecting stones that were more opaque (as less expensive rubies and sapphires tend to be), and I was simply amazed when I opened the box. The stones have beautiful clarity and color, and really sparkle! The gold setting looks very sturdy. Much, much prettier than pictured; a truly amazing value. You will NOT be disappointed!!
