Customer Rating: Summary: Very Good Historical Prospective About Islam Comment: This video is highly recommend for those who want to Know about Islam and its history:
- Well filmed and narrated
- Has a wealth of information
- Good historical prospective about Islam and its birth from the 7th to the 16th centuries.
However, the beliefs of Islam are not discussed or explained in this documentary. In addition, the documentary doesn't make the distinction between Islam and the Islamic empire. It is like talking about Christianity and the Roman Empire. Most rulers throughout the centuries have belonged to some religion, but it doesn't mean that they follow the teaching of their religion.
Overall, I believe this is an excellent source of information about Islamic history and early Islamic culture and its achievements.

Customer Rating: Summary: staid, purposefully stilted, but informative. Comment: Colorful and informative, "Islam: Empire of Faith" is really about a major branch of Islamic Civilization, and less about Islam the faith. The approach is a bit staid, which isn't unusual given that it's a PBS documentary. However it still provides a lot of information - information one rarely gets outside of academic circles - and as such serves as a kind of balance for the highly negative view of Islamic culture that predominates in the West. That said I do agree with those that point out that the parallel development of Shi'ite culture doesn't get enough treatment, and one could argue that Americans really need a good, reliable and balanced picture of that world, explaining the roots of Shi'ite resentment against the West. And to those who argue that this documentary wasn't sufficiently pejorative I would say that with so much anti-Muslim material in the media, there's a greater need for media like this, to give us all a bigger picture, from which to form our own opinions on how to regard the Muslim world today.
Customer Rating: Summary: Deep drilling into Islam Comment: This DVD shows the points of view of many professors and specialists about Islam. It also shows the begining of Islam and how was it prevalenced through Mecca. The DVD talks about the difficulties of the journey of the prophet Mohammad (pbuh), and then the triumph of spredaing Islam in the Arabian peninsula, and then to the whole wide world.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not so much Comment: Covering most of the Islamic era history in a shallow way, and choosing deliberately an actors with bad look to represent muslims in such a barbaric look.
I dont advice to see it, will add only bad imprission about islam.
