Simply break off the packet's tab, gargle the solution in the back of your through for 15-30 seconds, and spit it out in your sink. The answer isn't as simple as you'd think. Sore throats hurt because they are inflamed. Usually, the inflammation is due to a viral or bacterial infection, such as the common cold or streptococcus. However, sore throats may also be related to allergies or physical injury to the throat. In each case, an inflammatory response has been triggered. Pain, swelling and an itchy or irritated sensation are the common symptoms of this inflammatory response (the medical term for swelling is edema). As part of the inflammatory response, there is an increase in the water content of the involved tissues. With respect to sore throats, a sense of fullness or difficulty swallowing are both related to edema of the tissue lining the throat (mucosa). As you know, water tends to follow salt. For example, when you salt slices of raw eggplant the salt draws the moisture from the vegetable. After a few minutes you can see beads of fluid on the surface of the slices. Everyone has a different recipe for a salt water gargle, but all recipes tend to be fairly salty. If the gargle has a higher salt concentration than your intrinsic salt concentration, then it will tend to draw out some of the edema fluid from the mucosa of the throat. This will make some of your "sore throat" symptoms feel better. In some cases, gargling with salt water also has a cleansing action. If you are suffering from postnasal drainage due to a bacterial sinus infection or allergies, the mucus that drains from your nasal cavity is full of chemicals that tend to promote an inflammatory response. As this stuff drains down the back of your throat, it leaves a trail of inflamed tissue in its wake. Frequent gargling with salt water will help minimize these symptoms, too.

Comment: I used to mix table salt with tap water, but why do that? It's almost free! I discovered this product, which I can pay much more for! Instead of being subjected to imprecise measurements and the whims of tap water, I can now pay through the nose, if I so desire. What with inflation and the fall of the dollar, I'm always looking for ways to throw away my money. Thanks, Simply Gargle Salt Water Rinse!

Comment: As others have mentioned, this product tastes a bit strange and takes a bit of getting used to. The major benefit is that you can strategically leave some salt water gargle in places you frequent, like your office and your car, for times when you feel a sore throat coming on and would otherwise have to wait until you got home to do something about it.
A great product to have during cold and flu season!

Comment: There have been times when dentists have recomended rinsing with salt water. I'm not a dentist but there is a good use for this product and it is very convenient. If you are in need of this, I would consider buying this item.

Summary: It's all about the packaging
Comment: Simply Gargle is an interesting idea; a portable package that has a pre-mixed salt water solution that will allow you to take it with you to gargle on the run. Since the main idea here is the portable package, I will comment on that first. The package is small and looks neat, but that's where the positives stop. Some of the packets split in transit and spilled their contents which doesn't bode well for carrying this around in your bag. The next challenge with the package was that it was hard to open. Since there is fluid in the pouch you want to be able to open the package without squeezing, well that was easier said than done. Even though it is a twisting action to open it, you still need a firm grip. Lastly the packaging might look nice, but it had sharp edges, not enough to cut you, but enough that you didn't want to put it in a pocket. All in all the packaging was a disappointment.
Next was the actual solution. This might be a personal preference, but I really didn't like the taste. I used this when I had a cold and the taste made feel a little nauseous; not a good thing when you are feeling sick! I can't attest to restorative power of the solution, it seemed to be as effective as salt water.
Personally I will stick to salt water, but I gave 2 stars for an interesting idea even if it was poorly executed.

Summary: Gargling salt into wounds
Comment: I am convinced that using this product as recommended saved me from a more prolonged and painful throat and sinus infection. The small (barely 3" long x .5" thick), easy-to-use, and single-use packets allow dosing wherever and whenever you need it. The plastic-tab top simply twists off to allow a strong stream of solution to be squirted directly into the back of your throat. I stored mine in the fridge so that I could get the added benefit of cold relief, but room temp is the normal delivery.
Besides soothing my raw, ailing throat, I felt this salt solution also mitigated the sour, bad breath that usually accompanies sore throats and nasty, draining sinuses.
Simply Gargle is a simply practical and effective product.
