Summary: Some install tips...please read.
Comment: I saw this printer and just had to have it.

I've been wanting to get a wireless printer for some time. I have a laptop, my daughter has a laptop, and I have a desktop. BUT, I could not print on anything beside the desktop. Unless I shared out the printer and left my PC on ALL THE TIME....I didn't want to do that. Also, the idea of just having to plug this into a socket and not running any CAT5 was great.

So I started looking around for a wireless printer. I checked HP's site, since I've had good luck with their products. Well, they did not have a laser printer with wireless. I just couldn't find one. And I wanted to stay away from inkjet technology. I wanted something that was FAST.

Well, I saw this printer on sale and thought it was perfect. So I went ahead and bought it.

First off, let me tell you, I've been playing with computers my whole life and have been working in the IT field for most of my adult life. I tried to set this up myself without reading directions. Folks, let me save you some time, scan the documentation and USE THE INSTALL DISC. If I had only used the disc, I could have saved myself 2 hours worth of time.

I attempted to just install it via a downloaded driver and the utility found on Brother's website. Forget it...just use the disc.

Very important, you have to plug the unit into your router, then run the CD. Once you get the printer on your LAN, you configure the wireless portion. Then once you have set up the wireless portion, REMOVE THE LAN CABLE. It's kind of weird, but it WILL NOT pick up an IP via wireless until you remove the LAN cable. Once you remove the cable, if you have setup the wireless correctly, it will be on the network.

Also, if you are confused as to what wireless setup you may have, go to your router via configuration page and check the settings. I use WEP, but wasn't sure if it was shared or open....I definitely have a key, but nothing seemed to work, until I verified that it was "open". Once I selected the correct settings and removed the lan cable, it showed up. I used a ping command to verify it was on the network. Once I saw the ping, I knew it was good.

So far, this is a great little printer. I have set it up on my wireless network. Anyways...thanks for reading my review. I hope that it helps
Take care!

Summary: Great laser printer for a fantastic price!
Comment: I purchased this printer 3 months ago and it has performed flawlessly. Setup was extremely easy. I wanted a wireless printer and the setup under Vista couldn't have been easier. It is important to follow the setup instructions EXACTLY or the wireless connection will fail. The printer has an extremely small footprint and with it being wireless, it gets tucked under my desk out of the way.

I couldn't be happier with this printer!

Summary: Wish I had bought it years ago!
Comment: Finally a network (wired/wireless) laser printer that works as advertised. I have gone through multiple printers of different makes and was always turned off by bloated software and shoddy network performance. In comparison, I was able to install the HL-2170W easily on my Windows, Mac OSX, and most importantly, Linux computers (running Ubuntu/Mint). The Windows driver/utility is extremely non-intrusive and lightweight compared to the stuff Lexmark/HP sometimes make you install.

At this price, it's an absolute steal for everyday printing. Tiny footprint makes it easily sit in the corner of my kitchen countertop. Awesome.

Summary: Great Printer
Comment: Just received this printer and it's great! It was a little bit tricky to set up on one computer and 2 laptops, but definitely doable. It prints fast and clean and the wireless connection is great. I can have this printer anywhere in the house and it prints from any of my computers. Couldn't ask for anything more! Perfect for all the text printing one has to do without wasting ink on their photo printers. I would recommend this printer to everyone.

Summary: Great Printer, Great Value compared to an Inkjet if you don't need color
Comment: I'm a media professional. I work primarily as a recording engineer but I also set up and maintain websites and I do quite a bit of graphic design work for the web. With all the graphics I do, it seemed logical that I would really need a color inkjet for any number of reasons - but it never really turned out that way.

Typical consumer grade inkjet printers don't have the output quality that I need if I'm doing something in color for my job, the nozzles get clogged and text does not look as good as it could. Although the idea of being able to print color photos was appealing at one time, in reality I usually E-mailed color photos to people or used them in other applications over the internet - so I rarely needed to print them. Anytime I've had one of those all in one inkjet printers that scanned and faxed and printed, all those features essentially went to waste. I never scanned anything, I could fax documents from my desktop most of the time - so I never used the fax, and the operating systems on those machines were often cumbersome.

The Brother HL-2170w has been great. Although it only outputs black and white, it's really fast, it's wireless and my documents look great. If you are thinking of buying one of these little machines, you need to ask yourself just how often you REALLY NEED color. If 99% of the time you print black and white or greyscale documents with simple graphics, this machine is perfect. It never clogs, you never waste ink cleaning the nozzles and the images are sharp.

I DID have a couple of minor issues with the install procedure using an Apple Airport and a Mac as well as a PC, but the Brother phone tech department was really good and really helpful.

Nice product overall.
